Is monitoring recursive?

Hi,

I would like to know if monitoring is recursive? I have TV shows in a main directory called..TV\.  like so:
TV\24\Season 7\24.07x01.avi
TV\24\Season 6\24.07x02.avi
TV\Two And A Half Men\Season 6\Two.And.A.Half.Men06x01.avi

If I scan them manually, it works fine.If I have monitoring set to the directory  \TV, it see the new show and I have to manually scan them.

Do yo h ave any suggestions?

Thanks again for a great program.

Bill,

I also see this in the issue tracker...

Thanks

I don't know what you mean by recursive, however it does actually monitor and will rename the files as needed.

The correct format is: YourPath\TvShow\Season 1\Episode 1 - Name Of Episode.avi

are you talking about having more directories?

e.g.,

The correct format is: YourPath\TvShow set\TvShow\Season 1\Episode 1 - Name Of Episode.avi

Recursive meaning if I set it to monitor the MyPath\TVShow\ folder, it should go through all the subfolders from that point, not just any files only in the directory specified ignoring any subfolders.
It recursively goes through all folders looking for new files (those that do not have an xml file in the metadat folder) that are in the main folder specified.

If I set the Monitor Path to:
-MyPath\TVShows\

it should scan and find any new files(those that do not have a .xml(.my) file in the metadata folder)
in the following sub directories...
--24
----Season 1
----Season 2
----Season 3
--Fringe
----Season 1
----Season 2
----Season 3
--Lost
----Season 1
----Season 2
----Season 3

etc...

Does this make sense? It seems if I set the directory to be:
-MyPath\TVShows\
It does not *see* anything new in the sub folders.

Here is an example Ruby script for recursive directories...
http://www.oreillynet.com/onjava/blog/2006/03/recursive_directory_list_with.html
Don't know if it will help.

Im really not sure why its not chaning anything in those subdirectories, but yes, it should.  Can you do a dir /s *.avi > c:\tv.txt and copy and paste the list in here?

Bill.

Well, the problem with the current release is this, I do require the directry structure to be as such: y:\tv\Samantha Who\Season 1\Samantha Who.01x09.The.Break-Up.avi for example.
I have been testing some of the new features in 2.0, however am re-building the web service that 2.0 will rely on.  I am going to keep building up 1.8 and will take away the directory dependency.

Weird that your requirement matches what I have. I have the new version (I was testing out the .my file) and I will have this monitor the root of Y:\TV to see if it will catch anything new. I will keep you posted.

if that doesn't work, try manualy renaming Samantha Who.01x05.The.Restraining.Order.avi
to 05 and see what it does.

I found an issue with the monitoring, i fixed it, it wasnt renaming the files right.  Try it again: http://www.codeplex.com/tvmetadatafinder/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=22346
Maybe that will fix the issue that you described.

Bill,

Monitoring still does nothing for me. I set it to monitor a directory and it just sits there when i copy a new file into the directory being monitored. Does it matter if the drive is a mapped drive? shoudl I use a UNC path?
Also how does monitoring know when there is a new file? Is it timed or based on directory structure change?

Thanks again!

This is quite strange.....    It would almost help if i could see it working (not working).  Can we set up a Microsoft SharedView (its a free desktop sharing/meeting application)?  I think that it would really help solve this issue.

I have to ask, have you tried the latest version?
Feb 3, 2009 at 8:58 PM
I have the newest version..released yesterday, and I am testing it out.
One question though.
How does monitoring know when there is a new file? Is it timed or based on directory structure change?

Its more event driven, the file system in Windows will trigger an event that my program is listing for.  If triggered, it will start an event that I have programmed.
Feb 4, 2009 at 2:19 PM
I am going to point the monitoring to my local C: drive and copy a new file into it to see if it works. Currently it's pointing to a mapped network drive and that may be the issue. I will let you know what I find out...
Thanks again for a great program. I posted it in a SageTV forum topic yesterday and had one response that they liked it.

Thanks!

I would suggest not to point it to any root drives.  Rather make a C:\Videos\TV Shows directory and have it look like this: C:\Videos\TV Shows\Airwolf\Season 1\01 - show name.avi
The first part is optional, but i would have your seasons all in a sub directory from the root as shown

Bill,

Update on the monitoring. Sorry for the delay, but you know how it goes.

Monitoring works locally, but it does not on mapped drive or unc path.

Here's what doesn't work:
Monitoring of mapped drives or UNC path.

Example:
Y:\tv (mapped drive to network attached storage)
\\thenas\mediashare\tv (same location as above but using the unc path).

sub directories of above
y:\TV\24\Season 7\

Monitoring does not work when I copy a new file into any of the sub directories on a mapped drive or using unc path.

Here's what works:
Same directory structure as mapped or unc path but on local pc.

Example
C:\tv
sub directories of above
C:\TV\24\Season 7\

Monitoring works fine when I copy a new file into it.

Thanks

I forgot to mention i was testing sing the new 1.8.1869 version.

Also after a successful updating a file while monitoring, the program locked up.

I know it's a beta, but I thought I would let you know.

thanks again.

Hello.

The problem is also happning here on my side.  But what I found is it is actually working about 25% of the time.
I haven't had much time to work on it and to find where the problem is.  It  could just be an issue with .NET Monitoring over network file systems... but still unsure.
